falling in love with WI

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I'd wind up living pretty much in the middle of metro suburbia when I dreamed about raising a family someday. Especially when I fell in love with a guy who only wanted to talk about mountains, 3rd world countries and places like Tibet. So it's kind of funny that we winded up where we are now. My husband loves teaching at TEDS and we both thoroughly believe that it was a divine appointment that moved us here. I remember the first time we drove around looking for homes (after living on 2 acres in beautiful rural Michigan and where all of our church community literally lived within a 5 mile radius of each other) here in the burbs and we knew family life was going to be an adjustment. Now, four years later we still find heartpangs for places like Alaska & Africa but we are blessed to have made Wisconsin a home and especially blessed by the friends and community we've established here. Earlier this month we were able to slip away as a family and do a fall camping trip to Devil's Lake state park near the Wisconsin Dells. It was one of the most beautiful camping weekends we've experienced and as we drove home our hearts were grateful for our new "homeland".
Playing football with Dad at the campsite. The boys are in love with football...what is it with Josiah?...it is all or nothing with that kid. First he was obsessed with trains, then dinosaurs, then wild animals, and now football. The other night I had to read an entire book about the Seattle Seahawks to this boy. And twenty times a day he asks me "What's your favorite NFL team, mom?", only to be followed up by "What's your favorite college football team?" I have very limited knowledge (not to mention lack of desire to learn more) about football...but then again I have learned quite a bit about carnivorous animals over the past few years. I suspect I'll learn a bit more about football...
One of the beauties of having a larger family is the ability to have lots of helpers...like when Isaac wanted to play in the back of the suburban at our campsite. Josiah happily obliged him...and especially enjoyed cleaning up (make that eating) the bag of chips Isaac had dumped out. Josiah is wearing his coonskin hat (prized possession) with which he wants to be Davy Crockett for Halloween this year.Cole helps Maddie organize her beautiful leaf collection. In the parking lot getting ready to head out for a hike. Isaac was very excited that he was "free" on this trip due to the fact we forgot to bring the backpack carrier for him.
The four kids in front of the infamous "balanced rock." The pictures made it look huge but when you got up close it wasn't even as tall as Tom or I. The hike there was beautiful, though, a reminder that the journey is the destination sometimes.

More to come...

What gorgeous pictures! So glad to see you back on here. I was really concerned!!!

I am so happy that you have found such a sense of "home" there. I long to be established. Little by little, I guess. It is a GIANT boost to think of having Beth so close!

You look fantastic, Jen. Are you still running?

Love ya!

Love your post Jen. Josiah sound so much like Cameron--into everything with intensity! In fact, Cam has been pestering me to ask you to put captions around Cole and Josiah's pictures and tell what they are into now! He will be excited to hear that Josiah likes football!

Glad you got some away time in nature--beautiful!

I'm so jealous of the fall colors....beautiful! so glad ya'll had a fun time!

These pics were good for my heart...sweet kiddos! And regardless of (because of?) the sweets, you are looking really great! I'm going to try that chicken.

I'm still working on being satisfied with "where" I am...but enjoying the place and the people even if it's not "perfect". I guess that's all part of that journey thing.

(PS: Tell Si I pick "The Saints"!)

Amy: I don't mean to imply that we are perfectly established, either. The one thing I have learned is that some places are easier to make "home" and others take longer. It is a continued journey....

I am still running...although this time around I am doing a bit more weight training. I am emphasizing working as hard as I can in the least amount of time as opposed to always trying to go longer distances.

Cara: I will work on having the boys make those lists...excited to see you guys next month!

Kimber: Josiah's response (over breakfast) was "Who's the Saints?" I feel another trip to the library coming on thanks to you!

Great summary words on "enjoying the place and the people even if it's not 'perfect'"...

I love the pics of your family; fall is such a beautiful time of year! I love the pic of your mom and Isaac, too.

I'm back into running; I really missed it while I was pregnant.
Wish I lived close enough to be a running "buddy" with you! :-)

Hi Jen...haven't checked in a long while. Blogging has been back-burner for me. But I loved your pics and update. Loved your thoughts on being establshed where you are. So happy for you all, and so long to know that sense of it for ourselves! We do love the people, etc., but there's still such a gap between that and feeling at "home". Ah well........

Beautiful pics! Blessings....

Your pictures brought back so many memories of our trip to Devil's Lake State Park. It's a beautiful place. The pictures of your kids are a delight.

Josiah so reminds me of Andrew. He, too, was interested in only one thing at a time - bugs, birds, dogs, football, and now cars. The last one seems to have stuck.

I so enjoy your website and would love to see you again. Thanks for letting me have a peek into your lives.
Love,
Vicki Frederick

We are falling in love with WI too!! It has helped so much to have such a beautiful fall.

We went hiking at Devil's Lake a few years ago while we were camping at nearby Gov. Dodge State Park. Your pictures brought back great memories!
